The European fitness sector signed a public pledge at the EHFA London Summit on 22 November 2010. It was signed by the delegates at the conference at which the executive summary of the Becoming the Hub project was released.
In it the sector recognised the evidence for its own role and committed itself to act on it: to use its resources and skills to help citizens reach the European Union's guidelines on physical activity, and to build a framework of action for mass participation in exercise and activity. That framework was to rest on collaboration between professionals and on coordination between agencies, with the aim of getting more people, more active, more often.
The recommendations the delegates signed up to had come out of the project, and the association's account records that they were discussed and agreed before the pledge was signed. A commitment of that kind was a departure for a commercial industry, and it was made in public and with the Commission in the room. The association's case had always been that the sector should be treated as part of the response to inactivity rather than as a private leisure business, and the pledge was one way of accepting the obligation that came with the claim.
